Value Painting Ideas

This Abstracted view of a Landscape is more organic line than shape.
Although this painting is very painterly, it seems to be as much organic shape as line.

Sex On The Beach

This series of paintings is titled Sex on the Beach.  For a number of reasons I went this direction.  The romantic notion the true lovemaking is mysterious, wild and full of passion seems to be non-existent in contemporary media and culture.  It leaves nothing to the imagination and is void of any romantic connotations.  Prior to the 1960 sexual revolution, when a couple made love, we knew it as a cut to crashing waves and building music like Bolero.  The free expression and romanticism of these works intend to reflect this era.  Each one is wild and painted in a direct manner that is like that passionate encounter of sex on the beach, in the woods etcetera.

Prints of all of these paintings in this series are available in a variety of sizes , with frames or on canvas at www.ArtPal.com/profkenglish
Badlands at Midnight
I thought that this pastel painting looks like a mysterious landscape so I titled it as Badlands. This is a Pan Pastel painting on black flannel paper. I love the media of Pan Pastels and have a number of them that I want to complete in this series. Pan Pastels allows you to paint the color which is fun and free. I have soft stick pastels which I use to add the details.

Bali
The cool colors of this painting reminds me of tropical flowers and warm summer beaches. This painting is created with acrylic paint in purples, yellows, greens and neutral colors on paper. I love working with paint by allowing the accidental happen as the media does what it will do on its own. The background ran together with wet flowing paint to create the marbled paint look. Nothing was added at this point as I love the finished results.

Monument Valley
This painting is created with acrylic paint in oranges, blues, violets and neutral colors on paper. The Mountains and moon were added with acrylic ink.   I love working with paint by allowing the accidental happen as the media does what it will do on its own. The background ran together with wet flowing paint to create the marbled paint look.  Once dry I added the desert landscape abstract with similar neutral paint again with wet flowing colors.  The moon was added last.

Misty Evening Shore
This misty evening at the ocean's shore combines peace and a feel for wild nature.  I suppose the cool lavender sky contrasting the waves make me feel this way, I enjoy letting the media dictate the direction of the painting doing its own thing as colors flow and react to one another.
Beach View
Here I painted the high horizon where the waves and sky meet. I enjoy letting the media dictate the direction of the painting doing its own thing as colors flow and react to one another. In this work the acrylic ink and alcohol dictate the direction of the painting as the red, blue, orange, white and gold ink react to each other on the slick surface of Yupo paper. After the initial painting dries, a white moon was added to the composition.

Arizona Desert Night
Remember the nights when you were young and newly in love? This desert evening painting reminds me of that with the heavy air of Casa Grande Arizona's peaceful evenings in the mild spring air.

Sunset as Kilauea Cools
The wild orange sunset reminds me of a volcano sky so I thought of Kilauea National Parks in Hawaii. The rock formations seem to represent cooling lava.

Desert Sky
This cheerful painting was created as a demonstration to my students. When I started with the strange idea of a yellow sky and bright blue ultramarine mountains it seemed so different that I had know idea if it would work. I painted the high horizon with mountains at the top next to the yellow sky. It reminds me of a New Mexico sunset which love seeing.

Painted Desert
The Painted Desert is high in Arizona after crossing out of Grants New Mexico. I remember looking for the wild painted colors that I expected to see when I first traveled through there with my parents when I was younger. I immediately thought of this area with both high plains and mountain desert when I was painting this work.
Red Sky Night
This is truly one of my favorite acrylic ink paintings. I suppose it is the fresh way that the ink moves and the colors react. I printed a large version of this and it will be framed on my wall soon. I painted the high horizon with mountains at the top with sandy desert below. This was a demonstration painting for my students and everything worked just right. It reminds me of White Sands at sunset where the wild colors are reflected in the sand.
